DHI InnoTech with Shado (a global company that provides Electric Vehicle technology and charging infrastructure) unveiled the electric golf carts and scooters today as part of DHI’s larger Electric Vehicles (EV) project. Showcasing the EVs that were assembled in Bhutan by the DHI InnoTech team, the golf carts and scooters were tested on the road for performance from Thimphu TechPark to Norzin Lam.

Electric Vehicle Project Overview

The project has been segregated into three phases:

  • Proof of Concept (PoC)
In the first phase of the project, DHI brought several vehicles to Bhutan to be converted to ultra-capacitor (UC) battery design to demonstrate the successful use of UCs and rapid charging for commercial EV. The scope during this phase has been to assemble two units of electric motorcycles, two units of electric four-wheel golf carts and a high-power charging system to be used to demonstrate the viability of UCs as the battery power source for Bhutan’s commercial EV infrastructure.
  • Consulting Service
During this phase, DHI will bring in external consultants to Bhutan to work alongside DHI personnel for one year. InnoTech will work with the consultants to design and engineer the CEVs. In addition, the team will select and design the equipment necessary to build a low volume production factory to produce up to 1,000 CEVs per year.
  • Collaborative Co-Development
DHI InnoTech is looking to co-develop new technologies by leveraging external expertise in the fields of electric vehicles and robotics. To that end, InnoTech is exploring potential opportunities for collaborative co-development of technologies and vehicles to be designed, built, and tested in Bhutan.

The research and developments of EVs will focus on adoption of ultracapacitor-technology in the near-term. In the various phases of the project, InnoTech will engage and work closely with local colleges and research institutes to create human capacity in the fields of robotics, Artificial Intelligence/Machine Learning (AI/ML), Internet of Things (IoT), and autonomous EVs to create products tailored to Bhutan’s unique landscape and requirements.

The launch of the PoC today tested the electric golf carts and scooters locally for performance. Going forward, InnoTech will develop the way forward to enhance R&D and take the technology to the market.
