To honor the contributions of the teachers in leading young minds through continuous growth, we reached out to Madam Jigme Choden, Principal of Motithang Higher Secondary School (MHSS) to talk about the importance of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM).
Madam Principal at Motithang Higher Secondary School has initiated the establishment of an innovation and technology lab in the school to promote technology and enhance STEM curriculum. Currently, the lab is a work in progress, functioning on a small scale. The lab is leveraged by students to learn and explore implementation of STEM using Arduino, Raspberry pi, etc. The lab will also support the continuous upskilling of teachers of STEM in the school. The school is in the process of procuring more machines for the lab to increase its capacity.
Madam Principal, MHSS underwent the workshop on Leadership by Royal Institute for Governance and Strategic Studies (RIGSS), after which she invited Mr. Ujjwal Deep Dahal, Director, InnoTech to raise awareness of the importance of STEM. Since then, MHSS has been working closely with DHI InnoTech. The department has supported and guided MHSS to strategize and establish the school’s innovation lab. The teachers of the school have also actively participated in various activities, trainings, and tours conducted by InnoTech.
Recently, 14 Science and IT teachers and 11 students from MHSS visited the upcoming Super FabLab at Thimphu TechPark in Babesa. The group was guided to the different parts of the lab containing advanced fabrication equipments that include robotics, 3D printing, 3D scanning, imaging, logic analyzer, electronics production, Arduino IDE etc. Madam Sippy Parajuli, Head of the Science Department at MHSS expressed the value of the visit, “It was an interesting, educational, and a fun trip for all of us. The InnoTech team, led by Director Ujjwal D. Dahal, has helped us set up the new innovation & technology lab in our school. The lab will be run on a small scale to facilitate students’ learnings of science/technology as well as basic skills like carpentry, electrical works, etc.”
One of the core missions of DHI InnoTech is to promote and support STEM Education in the country and build human capacity in the field. Towards that goal, the DRIVE Center has conducted trainings on Arduino for teachers of STEM in Thimphu in the past. The members of the Department also frequently participate in conversations and conferences on Innovation & Technology and Digital Transformation.
